Despite his grumpiness and impatience, Shrek is a very wise being. Take, for example, this conversation (which I nicked from IMDB.com):

Shrek: For your information, there’s a lot more to ogres than people think.
Donkey: Example?
Shrek: Example… uh… ogres are like onions! [holds up an onion, which Donkey sniffs]
Donkey: They stink?
Shrek: Yes… No!
Donkey: Oh, they make you cry?
Shrek: No!
Donkey: Oh, you leave ’em out in the sun, they get all brown, start sproutin’ little white hairs…
Shrek: [peels an onion] NO! Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. Onions have layers. You get it? We both have layers.

I took a Reiki I class this weekend, and was reminded that a human being is the sum of many parts. We are not just our thoughts, our life experiences, or our left big toe alone. We are whole beings. Shrek said it perfectly when he said an Ogre is like an onion ~ they both have layers. As human beings, each of us has many layers – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, energetic. When we experience pain or dis-ease, it manifests on the physical level. However it may be caused by or reflected in the other layers of our being. Multiple layers need to be addressed in order to create healing.

No healing modality (like reflexology, reiki, acupuncture, massage, etc.) can ‘fix’ a person. The person has to be ready to fix themselves. They must be willing to deal with the cause/effects of their pain and make changes to heal the situation. People don’t like to change. Habits are very comfortable, even if they’re uncomfortable. Change is hard work and requires commitment. These days, most people are too busy and overcommitted and just plain tired. Some don’t want to put in the effort to make a change, even if it will save their lives.

That said, when a person does seek a path to healing, the best results can be achieved by  participating in multiple wellness activities concurrently – i.e. exercise, healthy eating,  bodywork or energy work, etc. which all serve to complement one another and collectively work towards balancing of the whole. Conscious work on one layer will affect the others. Conscious work on many layers will affect the whole for the better. So get out there and work on your onion.
